Workaholic term was first used in 1960 by a psychologist Wayne Oates who himself was a workaholic.
Many researches are continuously being done on workaholism to know more what it is and what are the effects of ict on health.
Since then, facts are that right now there are at least 10-25% of adults in United States of America that could be called as workaholics.
Now workaholics’ general concept is that a person who never stops, a person who is just all the time working is a workaholic. But this isn’t what it is all about.
But what really a workaholic does is that he is constantly thinking about work. He is obsessed with it. We all know a few people who made a commitment with you and he or she could make it too, but preferred to do some more work and ditched on family or friends.
Some people take it as a compliment when someone tells him to stop being a workaholic that ‘oh I just can’t stop working; I am so hardworking and sincere to work’.
Well let us tell you, obsession of any kind is never healthy. Every aspect of life has its own importance and significance. You can’t ignore work for family or fun. And the same way, some extracurricular activities are also essential for your mind to relax.
SYMPTOMS OF A WORKAHOLIC
Here we have made a list which contains some symptoms and signs of a workaholic. If you notice any of these in you or someone you know like a family, friend or colleague, tell them to make their life a well balanced life to stay healthy and happy.
A healthy, balanced life requires you to be sincere to your work but at the same time have a peaceful happy personal life too. Where you give yourself some alone, relaxation time and do any hobby you like and also be with family and friends as that is also a part of your life.
Hope this list will help you to notice any signs and if you do, make sure to reschedule your routine and work on it.
YOU TAKE EXTRA HOURS IN OFFICE
Workaholics are those people who are always there in offices. If someday you come early, you would see that one person who’s already there.
Due to some extra work, if you stayed a little extra hours, you would see that they are always the last ones to go back home. They sometimes skip break time too to work some extra.
YOU CAN’T SWITCH OFF WORK BUTTON
Daydreaming in office is considered healthy. If you are very busy in work and still thinking about something fun to do or relax, it is good for you as you are staying calm even in such hectic routines.
But a workaholic Is someone who can’t exit from work in their minds. Even when they are on vacations or a meet up, they would be concerned about work and could not switch that button off.
This is bad for health as it causes stress because your bodyworks on ‘rest and digest’.
YOUR BODY INDICATES
Being a workaholic is not good for health at all. They skip meals often or just have quick junk food; they do not take out time for daily exercises. They just sit behind a desk and work and constantly work.
Some common health issues those workaholics face are gastrointestinal problems, increase or decrease of weight because of deprived diet, irritation and tiredness, headaches and migraines.

These all problems happen because our body needs the ‘rest and digest’ system to stay healthy. We Are not robots, a human body needs care.
YOUR PERSONAL LIFE IS UNHAPPY
A research found that divorce rate in marriages was 40%higher in those families who had one or more anxiety, depression and stress too.
Workaholics miss important events in life like their kids birthday or marriage anniversary. This happens because either they are too occupied by work so they forget or they can’t say no to their boss or work.
Everybody needs to look for signs. Notice that if you hardly get to see your family or friends, you need to reset your routine and priorities. Work can’t be the only priority in your life.
YOU WANT PERFECTION
‘Perfectionism’. We all expect this unrealistic expectations from us. Nothing is ever enough for us.We are never satisfied by ourselves or work.
So we keep doing more and more and this is how our life becomes all about work. We only think of ourselves as achievers when we out-do everyone in a particular field.
In the process we forget that we are ignoring and destroying all the other big and important parts of our lives to succeed in one field which is never an achievement.
